Joe Pye weed – Eupatorium purpureum

Joe Pye weed is a handsome hardy perennial which grows to at least 2.1m with purplish stems, whorls of slender, finely toothed, ovate leaves and dense, domed corymbs of purple pink flowers in late summer to autumn.

Joe Pye weed grows best in moist, well drained soil in partial shade or sun. Propagated by seeds sown in containers in spring or by division when dormant.

Joe Pye weed has a restorative,cleansing action mainly used in for kidney and urinary disorders,including stone, cystitis and prostate problems . Also used for painful menstruation,rheumatism and gout.

Joe Pye weed is also known as Gravel root.

Gum tree- Eucalyptus

Gum tree is a large fast growing evergreen tree which averages 70m. Most have distictive , rounded juvenile foliage, adult leaves of E.Globulus and E.gunnii are lanceolate, blue-grey and studded with oil bearing glands. Clusters of fluffy cream-coloured flowers appear in summer, followed by globe shaped fruits

Eucalyptus spp vary from tender to fully hardy but one will stand prolonged low temperatures, especially when immature.Gum trees will grow in well drained soil and and full sun. It propgates from seed which is sown under cover in spring or autumn.

Eucalyptus has decongestant , expectorant properties and helps to lower fever. The essential oil is higly antiseptic. Leaf or oil is used in steam inhalations and vapour rubs to ease symptoms of colds, catarrh, sinusitis and respiratory-tract infections. Essential oil is used in massage oils and compresses for inflammations, rheumatism and painful joints.
