Ground elder is a herbaceous perennial with a creeping root system.Ground elder spreads rapidly, smoothering other pants and self seeds.Umbels of white flowers rise on long stems to 90cm above the leaves.
Ground elder is native to europe, naturalized in North America and found in woodlands.Ground elder is a rampant weed that growsin any soil and almost impossible o eradicate once established. The plant is definately not suitable for cultivation as it will take over.
The leaves and the stems are used.
Ground elder is an anti-inflammatory herb with midly sedative properties, it has a long tradition as a treatment for gout,sciatica and rheumatism.It can be taken internally as an infusion, and is applied externally for sting and burns.
Ground elder can be added to salads or cooked like spinach.
Ground elder is also known by the following names: Goutweed,bishops weed and herb Gerard.
