Yarrow – Achillea millefolium
Yarrow is a pungent perennial with flat, creamy- white to pinkish flower heads rising on tough stalks 15-30cm above a mat of greyish-green, finely divided leaves. With its creeping roots and efficient self-seeding it is extremely invasive.
Yarrow is widespread in temperate zones, founds in grasslands, waste ground and by roadsides.It is native of Europe and Western Asia,North America, Australia and New Zealand.
Yarrow is invasive and when grown as a garden palnt it is advisable to keep it in a container or to restrict the roots by surrounding with titles pushed into the soil.
The whole plant is used either in a fresh or dried form.
Yarrow contains azulene, which has anti-inflammatory properties. It increases perspiration and is taken internally, as a tea , for colds and feverish conditions, applied externally for wounds, ucler and nosebleeds. It is also used to lower blood pressure and to relieve indigestion.
Yarrow is also known by the following names: Soldier’s woundwort, herb militaris, carpenter’s weed,old man’s pepper, nose bleed, devil’s nettle, milfoil and also thousand leaf.
